  4.     Hi! My name is Adam Stein and I’m the author of the System 7 Pack! and 
  5. Application—Document Linker! You can find out more about the System 7 Pack! by reading the 
  6. enclosed press release.

  8.     Many of you have probably never heard of shareware. It’s really quite simple. A shareware 
  9. program can be copied freely, but anyone who uses a shareware program is morally and legally 
  10. bound to send in the small fee that the author requests.
  11.  
  12.     You may wonder why anyone would sell their software via shareware. There are two big 
  13. advantages to shareware for the user. First, you get to “try before you buy.” With commercial 
  14. software, you’re taking a big risk purchasing a product. What if it doesn’t do what it says it does? 
  15. What if it doesn’t do what you want it to do? What if it doesn’t work well with your system? With 
  16. shareware, you get to answer all of these questions yourself by trying the programs on your own 
  17. computer. You’ll never purchase a program you don’t want.

  19.     The second major advantage of shareware is cost. Let’s use the example of a commercial 
  20. software product that costs $99. First, mail order houses will probably sell it for about $65. The 
  21. mail order company may buy the product for $30 from a distributor. The distributor may then buy 
  22. the product for $20. The publisher’s costs for expensive packaging, disks, technical support, and 
  23. advertising may cost $10. The publisher may then pay the author a royalty of a few dollars. Out of 
  24. the $99 a user pays for a software package, the author may only see a few dollars.

  26.     Shareware cuts out all the middlemen. It’s usually priced very reasonably. All of my products 
  27. are $14.95 or less, including shipping, disks, and customer support. My System 7 Pack, which 
  28. contains three great products, only costs $29.95. This kind of value cannot be found in the 
  29. commercial world.

  31.     The major disadvantage of shareware is the fact that many users do not pay for shareware. 
  32. Shareware authors rely on the honesty of their users. Some users do not send in their fees thinking 
  33. that others will send in their fees. But in reality, every user is kind of a barometer of everyone else. 
  34. If you do not send in your fee, most likely, others will not send in their fees. If users do not send 
  35. in their fees, shareware authors will stop producing quality software. We will all lose in the end if 
  36. we do not support shareware.

  38.     Enough about shareware. I’d like to tell you a bit about myself. I founded Insanely Great 
  39. Software when I was 14 years old. I’m now a high-school senior and will enter college in the fall 
  40. of 1992 where I plan on majoring in entrepreneurial management. As I’m sure you are aware, 
  41. college costs have risen steadily over the years—an Ivy League education now costs more than 
  42. $20,000 per year excluding living expenses. I suppose you could call my software “College-
  43. ware.” I will use the revenues from my products to pay for my college education. If you use my 
  44. software, please send in the fees. I’m counting on you.

  46.     Ordering is easy. I’ve provided order forms with all my software in both MacWrite and 
  47. TeachText format. Simply fill out the order forms and send them along with a check or money 
  48. order payable to Adam Stein. I’m not able to accept checks payable to Insanely Great Software. If 
  49. you’re interested in purchasing a site license for your place of work, use the site license order form 
  50. which contains lower prices for volume orders.

  70. P.S. Version 2.0 of Finder 7 Menus! will allow you to change the names of some of the menu 
  71. items. For example, you could change “Empty Trash” to “Flush Toilet.” Version 2.0 was not 
  72. completely tested by press time but should be available by the time you read this. I’ll send the latest 
  73. version of all the utilities to you when I receive your order.
